The author decided on this area to study, as it is a little emphasised part of the studies of the course, yetit is an affliction from which everybody suffers. Thereis not one day that goes by when somebody you know says that they are feeling stressed, frustrated or under pressure. Yet there is very little done to try and combat it. It is seen as a psychosomatic complaint yet when it results in absenteeism, coronary or mental ill-health questions are asked about its sources. Shutting the barn door after the horse ahs bolted type of situation. Because the author has experience of the service industry more than any other, it was decided' to concentrate studies on that area. To review the data, many relevant books on stress in the workplace, stress in the home and psychologically based texts had to be read. But these books only gave a direction to the study and it was necessary to undertake primary research in the form of questionnaires in order to obtain viable and distinguishingly relevant information. It was then only a matter of putting :'. the pieces together to validify the theories. It is hoped that the reader understands and appreciates what is tried to be done in this study, and maybe enjoys and learns a little from it.
